One of the greatest benefits of being a PPOC member is the learning that takes place during print critique. Of course the steepest learning curve goes to those who submit prints for critique, but non-participants learn as well. Our guidelines are not as strict as PPA. We have designed it that way to encourage more members to participate. Join in the learning and the fun!

1. SCHEDULE: Print Critiques are held every other month. In order to participate you must be a PPOC member in good standing. Four entries are allowed per person, one of which one may be a wedding album.

2. CATEGORIES: There are six categories. They are Portrait, Wedding, Commercial, Alternative Imaging, Open and Wedding Albums. More categories may be added in certain months, and will be announced in Images and at general meetings well in advance. Members must fill out the entry/scoring forms provided and attach it to the back of their entry with their name phone number & title of the image.

3. IMAGE DIMENSIONS: Minimum image dimension is 4 inches with a minimum total of 80 square inches. Maximum image dimension is 30 inches with a maximum total of 720 square inches. The minimum mounting board is 16 x 20 inches and the maximum is 24 x 30 inches.

4. PRESENTATION: Photographs may be mounted to canvas and other substrates. It is your responsibility to be sure that your image doesn't scratch or cause damage to other images, as they are stacked in their appropriate category.

5. JUDGES: No one may serve on the Judges Panel (including alternates) if they have prints entered for that evening.

6. SCORING: Any entry receiving a 78 or 79 will come back for review by the Judges Panel to be determined whether they will move up to the merit category or stay the same. The method used for review will be thumbs up to show approval and a flat hand to remain the same.

7. AWARDS: All images receiving an 80 or above will receive a green merit ribbon. The Best of Category will receive a red ribbon. The Best of Category will be the entry receiving the highest score in each category. The Best of Show will receive a blue ribbon. It will be chosen by the judges from each of the Best of Category winners. Any image receiving a score of 90 or above will receive a black and gold President's Award ribbon.

8. SPECIAL AWARDS: At the October meeting, in addition to the regular print critique, a special award will be determined. It will be the People's Choice Award. It will be selected from all images that received a merit ribbon during the year. Each member is responsible to remember which of their images received merits during the year and bring them to the October meeting. Winners will be announced and will receive their awards, at the end-of-the-year holiday party.

9. PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE YEAR/CATEGORY: If eligible, there will be five Photographer of the Year Category awards given. One will be given for each category except wedding album. However, wedding album scores will be counted as entries in the Wedding category. Any member who has a minimum of five entries, averaging a score of 80 or above, in a category is eligible for Photographer of the Year in that category. The winner for each category will be the member with the highest average score from their five best entries.

10. PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR / OVERALL: Photographer of the Year-Overall will be awarded to the photographer with the highest average score from any five entries, averaging a score of 80 or above, and from at least three different categories. In the event that this person has also won Photographer of the Year for a category, the runner up in that category will receive the Photographer of the Year award for that category. In other words, a category award cannot go to a member who has also received the overall award.

11. IMAGE ELIGIBILITY: Photographs which have already received a PPA Merit may not be entered into PPOC Print critique for the following reasons: Education is the primary reason for print critique at the local level. Awards are a secondary function. PPA Merit images have already been judged by the best judges available. It is inappropriate to re- evaluate them at the local level. The local level is meant to be a testing area of images before they go on to state, national, and international levels, not vice versa.
